On the eve of the publication of the 2008 Progress Report for the Republic of Macedonia, prepared by the European Commission, and concerned by recent statements by Government representatives speculating on possible causes for the likely negative general tone of the Report, a group of 30 civic organizations asked the Government to stop its public opinion spin efforts and to not avoid its responsiblity if the Progress Report proves to be negative.

The Foundation Open Society Institute Macedonia, the Criminal Law and Criminology Association and the Helsinki Committee of Human Rights expressed their concerns over the newly adopted changes in the Law on Criminal Investigation Procedures and the Law on Communications Surveillance (all forms of wire-tapping and interception) without the proper public debate that could lead to a sensible balance of the fight against organized crime and the right to privacy.

A poll conducted by the National Roma Centre (NRC) from Kumanovo, shows that almost a half of the polled Roma women live in extramarital communities, while only one in ten Roma women owns personal ID documents and proof of citizenship, which leads to the situation in which their children are not entered in the new-born children registries.

The 2008 Parliamentary Elections in Macedonia, held last Sunday, June 1, were tainted by serious violence on the ballot day, resulting in one death, several wounded people and dozens of arrests.

Following the development of the electoral process in Macedonia and rising number of serious violent incidents, Civil expresses its deepest concern over the fact that the life of the citizens in Tetovo, Gostivar and other cities and towns in Macedonia are threatened, whilst the election process gets a face of an everyday terror, not the highest democratic process in the society.
