The OSCE Mission in Kosovo and non-governmental organization Terre des Hommes launched, on August 7, a public information campaign against child trafficking and begging in Kosovo that will continue through August.

NAKED FACTS is the fifth anti-trafficking campaign, under the motto Women are Not Meat; Children are not Slaves; People are not a commodity , implemented by ASTRA NGO. The campaign aims to raise public awareness and to warn the state institutions about the problem of trafficking in human beings in Serbia which is often neglected, in a society increasingly tollerant to violence and human rights violations.

Under the auspices of its programme for prevention and education on trafficking in human beings, Open Door-La Strada held a training programme for high school students on Prevention of Trafficking in Human Beings, November 16-18, in Skopje.

The office for prevention of trafficking of human beings opened yesterday in Debar, in presence of Government and foreign representatives. This is 15th such office opened by the Ministry, in cooperation with the Kingdom of Norway, OSCE and UNICEF.

Serbia is a country of origin, transit and destination for women and girls victims of both internal and transnational human trafficking schemes, with the aim of commercial sexual exploitation, states the U.S. Department of State Trafficking in Persons 2007 Report.

The Centre for Peace Studies (CMS) greeted yesterday, June 11, 2007, the final Draft-Law on Asylum that just entered parliamentary procedure. The draft does, in their opinion, is largely harmonized to EU policies and improves the asylum procedure in Croatia. The draft, however, has a number of defects and omissions.

According to a report released earlier today, the Ministry of Interior adopted a decision to grant asylum to a seeker, for the first time in Croatia. Asylum was granted to a female Sudanese national who sought asylum on basis of violation of religious freedoms and sexual mutilation.

A meeting organized by the OSCE's Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) and the OSCE Presence in Albania, aims to promote partnerships between anti-trafficking and Roma non-governmental organizations to better fight the increasing phenomenon of trafficking in Roma across Europe.

The status of refugees in former Yugoslavia and the Kosovo IDPs in Serbia and Montenegro has turned for the worse by the breakdown of the union of states and the uncertain status of Kosovo, say the representatives of the Group 484 at the presentation of their 2005 Report on Status of Human Rights of Forced Migrants.

The Board of Kosovo Women Members of Parliament organized a national conference on the topic: "How are we organized to fight the trafficking with human beings in Kosovo". A number of international and local representatives and entities that work on treatment as well as fight against trafficking in human beings took part in the conference. The conference emphasized that Kosovo is moving from a transit country, which it was before the war, to a destination country of trafficking.

According to information available from International Organization for Migrations, the number of victims of trafficking in human beings is reaching alarming levels, while the results from prosecution of such cases are dissappointing. Since 1999, approximately 800 victims of human trafficking found refuge with the IOM B&H. In addition to being saved from their slavery, the victims need legal protection, says Regina Boucault, Head of IOM Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Since the end of the war in Kosovo, 139 cases of human trafficking occurred, was said on Tuesday in a debate in Mitrovica, organized by NGO “Mundësia” under the auspices of an anti-trafficking campaign, supported by IOM, Finish Government, Office of the Prime Minister for Good Governance and assistance telephone line.

The Conference on Fight Against Human Trafficking, held earlier this week in Belgrade, gathered the National coordinators for fight against human trafficking, governmental and nongovernmental organizations and Red Cross organizations from the countries of SEE. The participants concluded that the human trafficking is among the most shameless and brutal phenomena and the among the worst human rights violations possible.

The United Nations have started an investigation of trafficking of children in Albania. The children are often victims of trafficking for prostitution. Huan Miguel Pettitt, the UN Special Reporter, held a meeting with the Minister of Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities, Koco Barka, to discuss this issue. The investigation will also include Greece.
