The Role of NGOs in Environmental Protection

Non-Governmental associations can have a crucial role in the process of public awareness raising about the environment.

These activities are particularly important in the countries of the Southeast Europe. They provide a great opportunity in the region for two reasons:

First, the majority of people in the region, especially in the poor transition countries, direct their efforts to the protection of their habitat and to sustainable management of their resources.

Second, the development of regional protection policies and legislation over the past decade are a direct result from the public appeal for safer and cleaner environments.

26.11.2008 The protests of the local population in the villages surrounding the Macedonian oil refinery OKTA, near Skopje, including the block of traffic into and from the refinery, yielded results. The management accepted the demands of the locals and will install pollution levels measuring equipment and will reconstruct the waste water disposal system of the Refinery.
