Non-Governmental associations can have a crucial role in the process of public awareness raising about the environment. These activities are particularly important in the countries of the Southeast Europe. They provide a great opportunity in the region for two reasons: First, the majority of people in the region, especially in the poor transition countries, direct their efforts to the protection of their habitat and to sustainable management of their resources. The protests of the local population in the villages surrounding the Macedonian oil refinery OKTA, near Skopje, including the block of traffic into and from the refinery, yielded results. The management accepted the demands of the locals and will install pollution levels measuring equipment and will reconstruct the waste water disposal system of the Refinery.

Croatian Ministry of Environment, Spatial Planning and Construction announced that since December 2007, when the system of separate collection of electric and electronic waste (e-waste) was established, a total of 3,327 tons of discarded electric appliances and electronic devices were collected.

The Zelena akcija environmental association presented its Zero waste manual. The manual aims to show that waste management is much wider than the simple matters of waste dumps and incinerators.
