Creation of political independence starts with the declaration. Ideally, if all relations and interests in a given geographic area are harmonised, or solved, the start of independence gets its logical continuation in the UN, where that status of independent state is made formal. Obviously, Kosovo not exactly in that ideal position and it needs much more than just political independence.

The Harriman Institute for Russian, Eurasian and Eastern European Studies at Columbia University in New York City has recently joined the efforts to find a solution that would bring the advantages to all the parties, by inviting a scholar from Indiana University at Bloomington School of Law, Professor Timothy William Waters.

Six rounds into the talks on Kosovo’s future in Vienna, it seems that children and children rights’ issues were not and are not likely to be put onto the agenda of the Kosovo Status Talks. Save the Children reminds and urges the international community not to neglect children and education during the negotiations.

The Regional Conscientious Objection Network «Objection for Peace» is a coalition of organizations that work on promotion of the right to conscientious objection in the region of Southeast Europe. It was established in February 2003, with the aim to achieve greater protection for the right to conscientious objection and its correct implementation in legislation and practice, in accordance with the valid legislation on regional level, through joint action.

More than 30,000 small arms and light weapons (SALW) from the Armed Forces of Bosnia-Herzegovina will be destroyed this year. The action is part of the Small Arms Control and Reduction Project in BiH (SACBiH), developed in 2004 by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and which is supported by the OSCE Mission to BiH and EUFOR.

The “Ten Years of Dayton and Beyond” International Conference for Bosnia and Herzegovina started today at the International Conference Centre in Geneva, Switzerland. On July 11, over 30,000 people gathered at the Potocari Memorial Centre, for the Commemoration Ceremony on the 10th Anniversary of the Genocide. The majority of them were family members that came there to mourn their dead, as well as to burry the remains of 610 identified victims, exhumed from mass graves across Eastern Bosnia.

The Day of Gratitude is a national holiday in Croatia, marking the memory of the 1995 military offensive “Storm”, which is represented by politicians and the media as liberation of Croatian land from the occupation nof the Yugoslav Army. Serbia commemorates, on the very same day, the victims of the campaign and the expulsion of over 150 thousand Serb civilians. The media don’t think, don’t count, don’t analyze – they merely present the attempts to woo the voters. The winking at the voters, with nationalist sly grin, as any flirt, heats up the passions of the lowest kind: fear, hatred, intolerance.

Last Friday, July 29, Ljiljana Zelen Karadjic, the wife of the war crimes suspect Radovan Karadzic, surprised Bosnian, Serbian and global public and political establishment with the call to her husband to surrender to the authorities.

Despite the fact that the people of Mostar are still living in a city which suffers from a troubled past, they are now searching for a means to communicate with their government officials in the hope of getting their most basic municipal needs met. Mostar is currently adjusting to the Office of the High Representative’s (OHR) decision to impose the unification of the six municipalities into one.
