The Cluster for Children, a group of nongovernmental organizations woking on improvement of status of children, demands from the Belgrade City Assembly, the Mayor and the City Council to urgently prepare and adopt a Local Action Plan for children of Belgrade, to secure the institutional framefork and budget suppot for its implementation.

About 300,000 people in Kosovo live in utmost poverty, and the province remains the poorest region in Western Balkans, finds the survey conducted by the UN, prepared for October 17, the International Day for Eradication of Poverty, marked in the world last Wednesday.

The Republic of Croatia and EU signed yesterday, March 5, 2007, the Joint Inclusion Memorandum (JIM). The JIM defines the strengths and weaknesses of social policies designed to fight poverty, as well as challenges and priorities of future social policies.

On the occasion of December 10, the International Human Rights Day, the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Serbia invited all relevant social actors, especially the state institutions, to contribute to the fight against poverty through protection and strengthening of human rights culture.

The Board of the “Living and Working Together” Coalition adopted the draft-Social Programme in its meeting of November 24, 2005. After it passes the round of debate inside the civil society, the draft will be presented to the House of Representatives of the B&H Parliament.

Sixty percent of Albanian citizens live in poverty and, to make matters worse, majority of them are young under the age of 21. Keeping in mind these numbers, reported by UNDP, the Chairman of “Albanian Society for All Ages” (ASAG), Nora Malaj addressed all government institutions in her statement for the media, with a demand to take all necessary steps to reduce this phenomenon.

At the beginning of the week, Suvareka MA agreed with the American Refugees Committee (ARC) the construction of 14 residential houses, including other accompanying infrastructure such as the road, water supply and sewage network. ARC will allocate 320.000€ for the construction of these houses, with Suvareka Municipality contributing additional 6000€ of its own to the implementation of the project.

One in five citizens in Bosnia and Herzegovina spends less than 2KM on food per day, while one million citizens live with growing concerns that they could fall below the poverty line sooner or later. Poor B&H citizens belong to the group of 2.73 people in the world that live on less than two US Dollars per day. Every three seconds, a child dies somewhere in the world of, otherwise, easily preventable diseases or as a direct result of poverty induced famine.

To overcome the youth poverty in Serbia, it is necessary to involve the young population in the decision-making processes on local, but also on state level. The Group 484 NGO conducted a survey on youth poverty in Serbia, with the goal to identify the levels of poverty with that population and to collect the youth’s proposal how to eliminate poverty.
