In a letter to the Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Lazăr Comănescu, and to the Serbian Minister of Labour and Social Policy Rasim Ljajić, Romano Them has strongly criticised the planned transfer of expertise between the two countries in the field of reintegration of forcibly repatriated Roma.

The La voix des Rroms and the EveryOne Group, joined by Rromani Baxt, Centre AVER contre le racisme, Ternikano Berno & Centre culturel gitan, started a petition against the announcement made by Italian Home Minister and Member of the North League, Roberto Maroni, of plans to record of fingerprints of Roma people in Italy.

A poll conducted by the National Roma Centre (NRC) from Kumanovo, shows that almost a half of the polled Roma women live in extramarital communities, while only one in ten Roma women owns personal ID documents and proof of citizenship, which leads to the situation in which their children are not entered in the new-born children registries.

Representatives of non-Serb nongovernmental organizations say, after the meeting held Yesterday, May 15, at the Gracanica`s Media Centre, that non-Serb minorities living in Kosovo are discriminated and are not stimulated to integrate into the Kosovar society.

The Board of Directors of the World Bank approved a USD46.6 million loan to Serbia for the Project for Improvement of local services. The four components of the Project will be implemented over a period of four years.

In a letter sent to the Constitutional Commission and representatives of the international civilian administration in Kosovo, Roma NGOs ask for substantial improvements of the draft constitution which has been prepared by the Constitutional Commission on the basis of the provisions included in the proposal of the UN Special Envoy Martti Ahtisaari for the Kosovo status settlements and is currently under discussion.

A report prepared by RNGO Roma 2002 will show if Macedonia will again be placed in the lower ranks of countries in terms of implementation of the Roma Inclusion Decade, or if the country has made progress into the ranks of the countries that pay more attention to these policies.

The Vojvodina Executive Council earmarked 2.1 million Dinars in scholarships for 355 Roma secondary school students who will received 48 EUR months for the 10 months of the school year. The Council also secured honoraria for the 98 tutors selected to assist and direct the education of the scholarship recipients.

According to information provided by the Roma and Ashkali Centre in Pristina Roma have started to leave Kosovo fearing an outbreak of new violence. During their field visits to the Serbian enclave of Gracanica nearby Pristina, the NGO found that at least seven families with 38 have already left.
