The Media Development Centre is the only specialized non-governmental organization in Macedonia working on issues of media legislation and policy. We talked to Roberto Belicanec, MDC Executive Director, about the situation in Macedonian civil sector, its relationship with the media and attacks on the organization.

The Right to a City initiative, which gathers actors on the independent youth and cultural scene, started an action three days ago to cover the posters and billboards advertising the Zagreb Youth Salon, depicting a portrait of Zagreb Mayor Bandic.

Since the establishment of democracy in 2000, the media reforms in Serbia have been both slow and inconsistent. In order to expedite the approximation to requirements presented by the future EU membership, Serbia needs to give up on its arbitrary media policies and legislation and commit itself to implementation of adopted regulation.

Zrinjka Perusko is a senior associate researcher with the Institute for International Relations from Zagreb, where she is the head of the Department of Culture and Communication. She graduated and earned her Ph.D. at the Department of Sociology at Zagreb University School of Philosophy. During the academic year 2001/02, she was a Fulbright Visiting Professor at the Department of Communication and Culture, Indiana University, Bloomington, SAD. Perusko taught Mass Media Communications, Political Sociology and Theory of Industrial Democracy, and post-graduate courses in Media and Society and American Media.

A recent survey conducted by the Media Development Centre and implemented by the Institute for Sociological Political and Juridical Research shows taht the Macedonian citizens watch the news on television and listen to music on radio.

In general, there is a good understanding and interplay between NGO's and different media in Albania. This is especially true for activities related to everyday living in Albanian society, where Ngo's concentrate their attention and seek support from the public opinion.

The position of the media regarding the non-governmental organizations, and vice versa, varies within a wide range of manifestations of both the media and the NGOs. This variety of manifestation is an expression of plurality and, as such, it is a measure of the democrative values of any society.
