How to Treat Waste Properly?

Starting in November 2004, the SANUS association started with the implementation of the “How to Treat Waste Properly? What is Useful Waste?” Project, supported by the Regional Environmental Centre for SEE (REC), in cooperation with the Austrian Development Agency “Austrian Cooperation”.

The goal of the project is to educate the citizens and the local authorities to change their approach to waste that could be recycled; to turn them to proper waste management, i.e. to educate about recycling in general. Waste has become a global problems and it deserves special treatment. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, the issue of waste is covered by the National Environmental Action Plan (NEAP) and the Law on Waste Management. However, the mere implementation of the legislation is far from enough, and little or nothing is known about the legislation and waste management in general. Such is the situation in the Una Sana Canton, as well.

In the course of implementation of the project, a public survey will be conducted in Sanski Most, Ostra Luka and Prijedor (in the basin of Sana River). After the questionnaires are processed, a round-table discussion will be held in Sanski Most, with an additional public debate to be organized in Prijedor in February of this year.

In order to educate the citizens, appropriate brochure and fliers will be published and distributed under the project. The engagement of volunteers in all three municipalities is of essence, for SANUS intends to identify as many illegal waste dumps as possible and to start eliminating them with the help of local communal enterprises and other municipal structures and institutions.

The Project is implemented, on the territory of the three municipalities, in partnership with Familija NGO. For the conclusion of the project, planned for April 2005, an art competition and exhibition for the elementary and secondary school students will be organized, which will be used to introduce that population with the problem of waste management and possibilities of recycling.

At the end of the release, SANUS asks:
Did you know that you may be charged with a fine of 80-3,000 KM if:
[+] you are caught throwing voluminous waste, burn rubber tires and other waste in public space
[+] throw away liquids, embers, toxic, explosive and flammable material in the waste containers!

What can each one of us do immediately?
[+] Boycott manufacturers that don’t organize collection of used packaging of their products
[+] Good waste management starts with prevention of creation of waste.

Therefore, avoid excessive packaging and low quality products that will have to end as waste
[+] Separate all useful waste, for further recycling
[+] Use textile and not nylon made shopping bags
