Programme of the International Day of Fight Against River Dams in Banja Luka

The Coalition for Protection of the Vrbas river will organize, on the occasion of March 14, the International Day of Fight Agaisnt River Dams, a signing of a petition on the construction of dams on the Vrbas, on the Krajina Square in Banjaluka.

The signing will officially start at 10 a.m. and by noon, it is expcted that all the interested to participate will gather for a protest walk to the City Council Building, the Parliament and Government of the Republic of Srpska, to present them with the demands of the Coalition. We will offer more information about the contents of the presented documents during and after the action.

The “20 Reasons why we oppose the construction of dams on the Vrbas? Leaflets will be distributed during the action. Also, over the course of the coming week, public debates will be organized in Krupa on the Vrbas, Rekavice and Karanovac, three settlements directly endangered by the plans to construct the river dams.

The Coalition for Protection of the Vrbas was established on the initiative of several Banja Luka based civic associations, in November 2004. Its goal is to inform the public about the danger that the high dams can present to the environment and the citizens of Banja Luka. At the moment, 21 civic associations are involved in the Coalition.

Broadcasts of video clip for the action, part of the “How Much is the Vrbas Worth” PR campaign, started this week on Alternativna Televizija – Banja Luka. It is expected that other television stations will start broadcasting the advertisement.
