Corruption Remains Part of Higher Education

Since February 2004, the Centre for Legal Assistance in the Fight Against Corruption, operated by Transparency International B&H, has received over 3,500 complaints on its toll-free number 0800 55555.

”The greatest number of complaints, over 40% of the total calls, refers to the work of the local administration bodies, while in 25% of the cases, corruption was reported in the education system. The problem is particularly prominent in the higher education, since we receive complaints from both professors and the students”, says Srdjan Blagovcanin, Coordinator of the Sarajevo Office of Transparency International Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The survey on corruption, conducted at the Sarajevo University by Transparency International B&H, shows that 60,2% of the polled students believes that there is a great presence of corruption at the University.

Of the polled students, 60.2 percent said that there is corruption in their faculties, 16.8 percent of the polled believe it is visible, while 14.8 percent said the corruption was extremely visible. The most common reported forms of corruption are bribery in the examination process and the admission to the faculty, as well as the insistence on purchase of obligatory reading materials.

TI B&H surveyed the corruption perception on a sample of 500 students from all schools and faculties of the Sarajevo University. The questions asked in the poll included whether the students think there is corruption in their university, what are the most common manifestations, what would they do if somebody asked them to pay bribes, etc.
