MI2 Activities

Arts perspective: whole generations of artists in the 1980s and 1990s, as well as art historians active over that period, never got introduced to Croatian or international scene in media arts. Apart from the MM centre in Zagreb, there wer no other institutions that would deal with this art form. The artists interested in media art worked mostly out of Croatia, and even chose the countries of the EU as permanent places of residence for their life and work. Long term, the trend has proved fatal for the local initiative in art theory and art history circles.

With the establishment of the Multimedia Institute, the new media culture has finally expressed itself through the work of a single NGO and the network of associated individuals.

Social perspective: By the 1990s, the cultural field remained removed from all social and political agenda, so that it was mostly oriented to the framework of big state-run institutions that strongly promoted the representative cultural production, while alternative culture was held at low levels, with minimal support.

For that reason, MI2 provides technical and consulting support to a number of young NGOs established after the year 2000. Also, MI2 supports a variety of activist groups' projects: environmental groups, LGBT activiests, feminist groups, anti-corporate groups, etc.
On of the inovative projects of MI2 is the Cyberkitchen – feminist and cyber theory with ICT workshops for women.

Economic perspective: one of the greatest obstacles for the cultural production was the lack of cooperation (collaborative practices) and networking of the projects. For years, individual works could't get any visibility. Therefore, MI2 initiated numerous partner projects, such as the Otokultivator, Clubture, Kultura aktiva, etc. This type of work attracted many similar organizations, cultural foundations and cultural strategists from all over Europe.

MAMA – net.culture club MaMa was opened on May 23, 2000, as a club space organized to support cultural, social and independent artists, NGOs and other non-profit initiatives. The focus of the club laid on the creatio nof new cross-section of diverse scenes, instead of just opening another facility on the existing cultural scene.

MEDIA LAB - Mi2Lab was initiated in 2002, as a project of the already existing systems for net support and media design on new fields of resarch and development of technology. Mi2Lab is organized as a space for training of media professionals and software developers. Through these programmes, the unique web publishing software, TamTam, was created.

EGOBOO.bits – EGOBOO.bits is a cross-section of complex intentions and activities of the Multimedia Institute, sharing the common idea of contemplation, practice and advocacy for cooperative models of production, taken over from the movement to develop free software. Thus, the contemplation and practical action are visible in the production of free software, music, video, theoretical works, publishing of books on this subject, as well as active lobbying and policy making efforts.

The music production today enlists 22 musicians and bands, with more than 60 online and 20 CD albums. The Music of EGOBOO.bits was accepted by wider music audience, as illustrated by successes such as the top of the HIT DEPO chart (the most popular music show on Croatian Television) taken by Zvukabrod, the „Zlatna koogla“ award, given by DOP magazine to No Name No Fame for demo/indie/biggest hope/debu artist for the past year, as well as the constant presence on the „cener“ chart of the Zagreb based Radio 101.

PASTFORWARD-
Theoretical module that deals with research, organization and publishing (Alexandar García Düttmann: "Friends and Foes. Absolutely", Saskia Sassen: " Countergeography of Globalization", "Čitanje grada u globalnom digitalnom dobu: između topografskog predočavanja i oprostorenja projekata moći"

Creative Commons Hrvatska – MI2 is active on the localization and promotion of Creative Commons license in Croatia. CC is a comprehensive solution for licensing of creative works as publicly available and open content. In the current environment of wide availability of digital technology for creation and exchange, an increasing number of authors and scientists wish for their users to be able to freely – without the constant danger of violations of copyrights – use, rework and exchange their works. CC enables the authors to express their legal will through the licenses and keep only some of the standard, restrictive conditions of copirights.
