Action Against Packaging Waste
Nine Croatian NGOs started a movement against discarded packaging, in response to the disobedience of the retail chains and store that produce the waste, who refuse to apply the Rules and Regulations on Packaging adopted by the Ministry of Environmental Protection.
After the Croatian Employers Association (CEP) publicly declared that the Rules were “illegal”, the environmental organizations involved in the movement asked the citizens to “not give in to the refusal by the retailers to accept returned packaging and bottles”.
They insist the it is not the citizens that produce 13 million tons of waste each year; they are just the final link in the chain of actors that produce the waste and place it on the market. Therefore, the citizens are entitled to compensation for all the used packaging and containers they return to the retail stores.
The organizations demand from CEP to urgently revoke its decision for refusal of the Rules and Regulations on Packaging Waste, and from the authorities to take actions against the group inside the CEP, as provided by the Law on Waste Disposal”, says the public release issued by Osijek Greens, Kneja, EkoKvarner, Croatian Environmental Press Centre, Zivot Association for Animal Welfare, ECO Oroslavlje, Omblici and the HUZP – Croatian Association for Customer Protection.
This ad hoc coalition demands from all retail stores and chains in Croatia to immediately and unconditionally fulfil the technical and financial requirements to involve the citizens in the process of return of used containers and packaging for legally prescribed compensation, having in mind that they had ample time to align their operations to the legislation in 2005.
The Initiative will hold activities, in the respective cities and municipalities of the involved associations, of public education for the citizens about waste disposal and inform and motivate them to implement the legislation and the possible health hazards created by pollution.
