”The pollution is most dangerous for the oldest and the youngest members of the community, who are constantly at the doctors’, their health seriously damaged... The situation is similar in several other parts of Skopje, having in mind that the winds transport the pollution towards the boroughs of Butel, Cair, Radisani, Avtokomanda, Keramidnica...”, says one citizen, long-term envirornmental activist and member of “Eko-Misija” environmental organization.

He complained of the authorities and competent institutions, who fail to take action or, which is common occurrence, just drop the ball in each other’s yard.

“Mayor Koce Trajanovski has promised several times that he will take action to solve this huge environmental problem, but since then, the situation has further deteriorated”, say the activists of “Eko-Misija”.

The “Mak Steel” Corporation responded to accusations that works to modernize the facilities and approximate the steel mill operations to the European standards are under way.

”We expect the new equipment that will reduce the emission of pollutants by 10 percent”, says Aleksandar Panov, the General Manager of Mak Steel.

Vlatko Serafimov from the State Environmental Inspectorate, comments that they have not received complaints from the citizens of “Zelezara”, and adds that in December, when they did receive several complaints, the measurements didn’t show air pollution above the legally prescribed limits.
