Pfanner Juices Withdrawn from Croatian Market

The Croatian Food Agency from Osijek informed the public yesterday that it has discovered presence of ITX (isopropyl tioxanton), a chemical considered harmful for human health in two types of juices produced by Austria’s Pfanner Co. and sold in the Croatian market.

The Agency immediately ordered that 33.000 units of juice (one and two litre containers), Multi Rosso Bio and Multivitamin Nectar, are withdrawn from the markets, reported Boris Antunovic, the Director of CFA.

The manufacturer of the containers, Swedish company TetraPak, used ITX for printing the food packaging containers, which resulted in the withdrawal of over 30 million litres of milk for infants and children, produced by Nestle in Italy, last year. In December 2005, ITX was discovered in Italy in several other products – juices, wine and olive oil, produced in Italy and Austria.

“Warned by the events in Italy, the health inspection in Croatia has increased the control in the market, and the Public Health Bureau of the City of Zagreb procured the equipment capable to detect the presence of ITX. Samples of juices by several producers were taken, and the lab results proved presence of ITX, used to stabilize the colours on the packaging, in two juices produced by an Austrian company”, explained Antunovic.

Antunovic added that the discovery of ITX and subsequent actions taken by health authorities was the first information dissipated through the newly established System for Crisis Information, based in Osijek, which started operating on January 1 of this year.
