OIA Launches "Shake Up the State" Campaign

After it submitted to the political parties in Bosnia and Herzegovina the 40,000 letters by citizens who said that they won't vote for political parties that fail to include youth oriented programmes in their platforms, and after it held series of meetings with representatives of institutions, the Youth Information Agency officially launched its "Shake Up the State" campaign, in front of the Parliament Building in Sarajevo. The campaign will last until the October 2006 parliamentary elections.

The promotion of campaign activities takes place in Mostar, and OIA announced that a press conference in that regard was to be held at the Mostar Nansen Dialogue Centre earlier today.

The Agenday is a document intended to convince the B&H polticians that the youth, in spite of the fact that only 25% of them voted in the 2002 Elections and the general view of the youth as inactive, disinterested and lethargic, will vote in numbers in the coming elections, due to the fact that they don't need to register, because there is a new, educated generation of young voters, and because of the motivation they get from the generally bad situation of the youth in B&H society.

According to Jan Zlatan Kulenovic, the leader of the campaign on behalf of OIA, the start of the "Youth Agenda" action presents a list of false promises a number of ministers made during the terms in office of the past two governments (Resolution on the Youth – 2002; initiative to establish a youth department – 2002; opening of Youth Resource Centre – 2003; adoption of Law on Higher Education, adoption of national strategy on computerization of schools – 2004). The governments are reminded of their mistakes and offers 71 youth-related questions.

"We ask concrete questions and ask the politicians if they offer facilities, finances, computers for the schools, i.e. which are the programmes they plan to implement for the 45% of the youth on employment bureaus", explains Kulenovic.

He also promised that the youth will come out and vote in numbers, having in mind that "…they've had it with reformist politicians who don't do anything for the youth". In the first phase, the youth were focused on political parties and will meet the party leaders over the next two weeks.

Youth Agenda is just one of the activities planned under the "Youth and Elections" project, supported by the Open Society Fund B&H, which aims at greater participation of youth in the coming parliamentary elections.
