Performance Against Retrograde Phenomena and Harmful Institutions

The Horkeskart organization gave a performance in front of several national institutions in Belgrade. The institutions were selected based on the criteria that “... as it is, they make more harm than good”. Members of Horkeskart sang the Nazad! song, in front of the Belgrade University, the Serbian Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Patriarchy Building, the Supreme Court and the Government of Serbia.

According to Horkeskart, the performance was a direct criticism of the accumulated retrograde phenomena in the society and the institutions that create them or, at least, take no action to remedy or prevent them. The performance was supervised, for the whole duration, by several policemen.

Horkeskart (a 45-persons strong choir and orchestra created in the Autumn 2000, after the “Skart” group was invited to present its samizdat action “Your Shit – Your Responsibility” at the Centre for Cultural Decontamination. Horkeskart expresses its positions through choir music, and their action is supported by the Women in Black.

Since its establishment, Horkeskart practices on regular basis and performs in a variety of venues, from rural elementary schools, refugee camps and flee markets, to the Museum of Contemporary Arts and the “Ring-Ring” festival of contemporary music. The choir has also performed in Croatia and Macedonia, as well as Germany. Horkeskart also performed in the 2002 Cetinje Biennale.
