Support for Environmental Protection NGOs in SEE
The Regional Environmental Centre for SEE (REC), and the Swedish International Agency for Development and Cooperation (SIDA) started the four-year SECTOR: Supporting Environmental Civil Society Organisations Project.
The activities of this project aim to promote the development of vibrant and democratic nongovernmental sector in the countries of Southeast Europe which could have positive impact on the society in terms of implementation of principle of sustainable development and assist the improvement of living conditions in urban environments. Organizations from Albania, B&H, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Kosovo (territory under temporary UN administration) will appear as beneficiaries of this project.
The first step under this project is implementation of a wide research programme, with intention to renew the existing REC list of environmental NGOs and to define their status, needs, as well as problems faced by CSOs in SEE.
The results of the research will be used to prepare and plan other forms of support offered by the SECTOR programme:
-
a tool for evaluation of CSOs organization capacities;
-
programme for distribution of financial assistance for projects focused on activities in urban communities and sustainable development;
-
assistance in establishment and work of SCO networks and training for key skills that would increase the number of activities of environmental groups, especially in lobbying, advocacy and participation in decision-making processes.
These auxiliary activities are already under preparation and will be promoted by the end of 2006. Their final shape and form will depend largely on the results of the research.
REC invites all interested organizations to take part in the research by submitting the completed questionnaire (available on the local REC Office website in each individual country) to the local REC Office. The results will be presented in the next issue of the NGO Directory and will be used for promotion of activities of environmental associations in SEE, as well as for more efficient promotion of their needs.
The deadline for submission of completed questionnaires expires on June 26, 2006.
For additional information, contact your local REC office (the list is available on the following LINK.
