Summer School 2006: Environmental Integration in Territorial Management and Planning’
the Regional Education and Information Centre for Sustainable Development (REIC), Sarajevo announces Summer School ‘Environmental Integration in Territorial Management and Planning’ from August 28 – September 10, 2006 in partnership with UNESCO – BRESCE and the Centre for Central and Eastern Europe Studies at the University of Bologna.
Objective
The Summer School 2006 is centered on the learning potentials offered by the local territorial dynamics, and Lonjsko Polje National Park, Croatia has been taken as an in situ example of ‘territorial laboratory’. The objective of this specific Summer School programme is to stimulate sectoral knowledge articulation while exercising on the formulation of an integrated management plan for the specific area. The 4 interdisciplinary Thematic Units have been chosen to offer specific analytical view points, in fact, the results of the respective working groups will be integrated within an overall holistic approach to innovate management planning. The theoretical part of the programme is conducted in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina and residential week in NP Lonjsko Polje, Croatia.
Teaching and Main Themes
Four separate groups of 6 participants are formed where each is led by a Teaching Unit Coordinator and Assistant. Working methods combine lectures and presentations with in situ group work during the residential week. The 4 interdisciplinary Thematic Units are as follows:
1. TERRITORIAL CERTIFICATION
Coordinator: Prof. Luigi Bruzzi, University of Bologna
Assistant: Prof. Giordano Dominici, University of Bologna
The main objective of the teaching unit is the acquiring of knowledge and skills needed to certified territories with particular attention to protected areas. The main tools and methods used for territorial certification, such as ISO 14001 and EMAS, will be introduced taking advantage of typical characteristic of Lonjsko Polje Nature Park in which training activities are performed.
The frontal lectures teaching activities will be integrated with field activities including recognition and qualifying of the typical environmental issues of Lonjsko Polje NP as well as the use of Geographic Information System to create exemplificative environmental database.
The experience acquired in previous project involving territorial certification and particularly the procedure adopted for Cervia Municipality in Italy, including protected areas will be used as specific case studies. Guidelines already available at national level for certifying protected areas will be also described in details and their applicability to Lonjsko Polje NP further verified.
2. CULTURAL HERITAGE
Coordinator: Prof. Vjekoslava Sanković Simčić, University of Sarajevo, Faculty of Architecture
Lonjsko Polje is an area with a rich natural and cultural heritage, consisting of: cultural landscape, historical units of buildings and settlements, with all interrelations of the natural and the artificial environments. Their values are related to age, history, culture and emotions.
Cultural heritage expresses social identity and prosperity and has not to be seen as an obstacle to local development, rather an opportunity. The interdisciplinary cooperation is needed for its protection and valorisation, the authenticity of structures being one of the fundamental values to assess.
The aim of this module is to identify the best forms to protect cultural heritage, avoiding negative and excessively impacting operations. In doing that, participants will be asked to identify appropriate measures to increase the public knowledge and the awareness towards a better appreciation for the local heritage.
Theoretical approaches on cultural heritage will be presented during the introductory phase to be held in Sarajevo; in Lonjsko Polje NP, more practical activities will be conducted, including local people interviewing and interacting. Ultimately, an analytical concluding session will be held in Sarajevo after the residential module.
3. NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
Coordinator: Mr. Boris Erg, World Commission on Protected Areas member
Assistant: Ms. Vera Cvejić, ecologist
Natural Resources Management teaching unit is aimed at providing basic knowledge on wetland ecosystems, as well as necessary skills for the development of territorial management plan considering participatory approach, integration of local communities and safeguarding of natural resources.
Special emphasis will be put on the river ecosystems, their structures, functions, values and threats, as well as importance of biodiversity conservation and sustainable use of natural resources. Within an interactive two-week exercise, by applying different didactic tools and using features and existing management practices in the Lonjsko Polje Nature Park as a case study, participants are invited to work on the ecological assessment and the management plan development.
The exercise is expected to be holistically framed, taking into account all natural, social, economic and cultural aspects relevant for the management of an area and its integration into the wider regional development scheme.
4. TOURISM
Coordinator: Mr. Michael Mayer, Ecological Tourism in Europe (ETE)
Assistant: Ms. Stephanie Roth, ETE
The initial part of the Module "Sustainable tourism" of the Summer School 2006 will introduce the participants to the principles of sustainable tourism and related issues like sustainability, the tourism industry, product development, marketing and management planning.
During the residential part at Lonjsko Polje NP, the participants will work in the field on the four consecutive topics "Principles of sustainable tourism", "SWOT analysis", "Tourism product development" and "Tourism management planning". The Nature Park and its current tourism facilities will be the living laboratory for the participants to train their practical skills of analysing potentials and pitfalls of tourism. Based on this analysis, the participants will develop strategies for sustainable tourism in the Nature Park. The overall aim of the group work is to integrate their ideas into the framework of a tourism management plan. The participants will work independently in small groups, exploring the nature park on their own and communicating to the local stakeholders of the tourism sector. The work of the module will be supported by the Tourism Department of the Nature Park's administration.
