MANS Demands Criminal Prosecution for KAP Pollution Cover-Up
The Network for Affirmation of Non-Governmental Sector (MANS) announced that it will demand from the State Prosecutor to bring up criminal charges against all persons involved in cover-up of information on environmental situation at the Podgorica Aluminium Corporation (Kombinat aluminijuma KAP).
MANS says that past experience in the implementation of the Law on Free Access to Information demonstrates that state institutions are inclined to hide the most important data regarding the process of privatization in Montenegro. The organization adds that the most striking example involved information on situation of the environment in the area surrounding the KAP, declared confidential by the Privatization Council, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and the Centre for Eco-Toxicological Research.
"Obviously, all competent institutions decided to declare the KAP pollution data confidential, which is in the interest of KAP owners and not the citizens of Montenegro", says MANS. MANS asks which may be the motives of the Privatization Council, the Ministry and CETI to protect the interests of an off-shore company by concealing the pollution data, while at the same time, they continually manipulate the public claiming that pollution is far below dangerous levels.
MANS will present the complete documentation on this case to the State Prosecutor’s Office, with the request to bring up criminal charges, in accordance with the Law, against all persons involved in concealing data on environmental situation, which are public domain and necessary to asses the dangers the Corporation presents to the environment.
