Thanks to from big corporations, but also to contributions made by the citizens of Serbia, 95,000 EUR were collected, which means that about 25,000 EUR are missing to complete the project.

Prior to the start of the works, the representatives of the Counselling Office against Family Violence, the Municipal Council of Rakovica and B92 signed an agreement on the construction of the first Safe House. The title and the property rights will be transferred fully to the Counselling Office.

"This is one of the most important days for us, since we started working, having in mind the signing of this agreement on construction and future cooperation”, said Vesna Stanojevic, coordinator of the Counselling Office.

"We, as nongovernmental organization that works on providing shelter to women and children victims of family violence, can hardly find the words to describe its importance”, she added.

"It is of great importance that the action was accepted in a positive fashion by both the citizens and the institutions. In my view, there was great understanding about the nature of the action”, said Veran Matic, B92 General Manager.

"We aim towards the goal to establish an adequate number of safe houses in Serbia and to make this an important national issue that will be solved in cooperation of the state institutions with the NGO sector and the media", he said.

The first safe house with capacity to accept 30 users should be finished and open for use by the end of the first half of 2007.

The biggest donors for the time being are Erste Bank, Delta Holding, Coca-Cola Co. and Telenor. Numerous smaller enterprises and citizens contributed more than 10,000 EUR.

Users of Telenor’s network can contribute by calling the number 063-9765, and the other interested persons may make deposits to the bank account, available at B92 site dedicated to the Safe House.
