Stop Hate-Graffiti

The Youth Initiative for Human Rights called upon the authorities to stop the practice of non-sanctioning of writing racist, nationalist and fascist graffiti in Serbia. The authorities are legally obligated to react strongly and sanction the perpetrators of such criminal offences.

Over the last several days, graffiti glorifying the genocide in Srebrenica appeared in many towns in Serbia, as well as graffiti calling for assassination of President Boris Tadic. Unknown perpetrators covered the billboards of the LDP-GSS-SDU-LSV coalition with anti-Semitic and racist messages, while in Zrenjanin, the Hungarian language posters of the YIHR inviting the citizens to take part in the elections were torn down.

Over the last week, various internet forums carry posts calling for a lynch, murder and prosecution of political opponents and members of minority communities.

In the past three years, the authorities have sent a message, through their non-sanctioning policies, that graffiti are accepted and allowed form of hate-mongering. Such policies lead to the creation of a climate of fear and rising violence in the society.
