Future of Civil Society in Serbia

The Millennium Centre for Civil Society Development published Future of Civil Society, a book of speeches by assassinated Prime Minister Djindjic, his essays on conditions in the civil society, but also texts and essays by Vukasin Pavlovic from the Faculty of Political Sciences, Zoran Stojiljkovic and Srecko Mihajlovic from the Social Sciences Institute.

The editor Zarko Paunovic says that the book aims to promote discussion and the “debate on civil society interrupted after the death of Zoran Djindjic”.

At the book-launch ceremony, Paunovic commented that the future of civil society in the country depends on the ability of the state to create the legal framework and political instruments that would provide for its unimpeded work. He added the Serbia remains one of the few countries in the region with Government that almost never mentions civil society in the process of political modernization.

"The civil society is almost fully absent from the development strategies. There are sectors in certain Ministries that work on those issues, since they are obligated by the international organizations”, said Paunovic.

The book is available for downloads (in PDF) at this link.
