Vecernji List Prints Graphic Violence against Women
The “Vecernji list” daily illustrated its yesterday’s (April 3, 2007) article on the arrival of IKEA shop in Croatia published on the paper’s web-site, with a photo of a naked female body tied in S&M props, used as a stand for and IKEA product. The caption of the illustration states that this was IKEA advertisement for the Russian market.
The Commission on Supervision and Assessment of Implementation of Gender Equality Policies in the Media immediately reacted and sent a protest note to “Vecernji list”, the Honour Council of Croatian Journalist Association, Gender Equality Ombudsperson, Broadcast Media Council and the Embassy of Sweden.
The Commission states that publication of such photographs is a clear example of graphic violence against women and warns that it represents a serious violation of Croatian laws (Gender Equality Law, Law on media, etc).
In addition to discrimination and degradation of women, this photo is also a violation of journalistic professional standards. The said illustration is not, in fact, an advertisement for “Russian market”, but was taken from www.musseljuice.com blog which defines itself as “satirical weblog that published 1,000 percent fake news and opinions”.
The Commission emphasizes that this is not the first time for Vecernji list, especially in its electronic edition, to present quasi-news that are insulting for women. Such was the case with the information about the anti-HIV/AIDS campaign financed by the foundation of former German tennis player Michael Stich, which is illustrated with a single photo that emphasizes the pornographic elements of the campaign which is already controversial and has stirred a great debate on global level.
The Commission demands from “Vecernji list’s” editorial office to publish, in accordance with the Law on Media, its objection in a proper place, to review its editorial policies and accommodate it to the provisions of the Gender Equality Law and other legislation, and to apologize to its readers.
The Commission also called upon the competent authorities to take proper measures. It will also inform the Embassy of the Kingdom of Sweden with a request to inform the owners and management of IKEA about the market they might consider entering.
