CTC Prepares New Forum Theatre Play

The Children Theatre Centre – Skopje started the rehearsals of “Balkan Express”, a play by contemporary Albanian dramatist Stefan Capatiku. The play is prepared under the auspices of the Forum Theatre project.

The play is directed by Vladimir Milcin, the set is designed by Krste S. Dzidrov, the music is composed by Marijan Necak, and the costumes are designed by Marija Pupucevska.

The main roles will be played by Vehbi Kerimi as the Man, Hismet Ramadani as the Wolf, Mirlinda Saiti as the Cabbage and Miradie Osmani as the Goat.

"Balkan Express" is based on the medieval Russina story that is taught in schools all over the world. It has four characters, whose names and mutual relations carry the idea of a contemporary story with significance to the modern world.

According to Capaliku, he used the story to present a post-communist situation in the Balkans where escape is the challenge faced by all Balkanians, escape from their own respective fatherlands, even in a small boat for two. Capaliku says that the basis for the dramatic conflict arises from the wish to escape and the real inability to do so.

The author also borrows from Shakespeare’s Hamlet, the Prince of Denmark, from where the character of the Ghost was taken.

"Balkan Express" is an open text which offers opportunity to presented it as forum theatre or interactive theatre. Many scenes and dialogues create opportunity and stimulate the dialogue with the children in the audience. The audience itself is the aim of the project that uses the Forum theatre as form of communication.

The premiere of the play is planned for the end of this month (May 2007). The project is financed by the „Ulof Palme“ International Centre, in partnership with the NGO Infocentre.
