Mjaft! “Shuts Down” the Ministry of Environment

Last week, Mjaft! Movement’s activists, donning surgical masks, declared the Ministry of Environment closed. During the Ministry’s working hours the activists placed themselves outside the Ministry walls, on “Durresi Street”, holding banners that loudly proclaimed the following message in capital letters: “CLOSED DOWN”.

“How can we expect for this Ministry to improve the environmental situation when the head of the Ministry is one of the most infamous polluters in Albania and one of the most powerful businessmen that import used tires, the majority of which end up being burned [for fuel]. It is better not to have such a Ministry at all. At least then the environment will not deteriorate beyond its present condition”, said Leart Kola, Mjaft! Activist.

”Prime Minister Berisha must further develop his sensory organs if he would like to detect the citizens’ complains and problems,” Kola added.

This was the most original and creative way that Mjaft! Movement has reacted against environmental pollution thus far. One of the main contributors to the environment’s deterioration is, unfortunately, the Minister of Environment, Lufter Xhuveli. It is for this reason that Mjaft! activists donated a used tire to Xhuveli a few days ago, while he was holding a lecture on Earth Day.

However, as soon as the protest was over, the Ministry’s spokesperson officially denied the fact that Minister Xhuveli is involved in the business of importing used tires.

“These allegations are false and politically biased,” reported the spokesperson on behalf of Mr. Xhuveli. The latter was not present even for a single moment during the entire event.

In the meantime, Mjaft! Movement’s Press Office is in possession of an official document, signed in accordance with state regulations, verifying that it is precisely the Xhuveli family that owns this factory, which is located in Fier. This is a fact that was, for the first time, reported and condemned by the media. As a matter of fact, there is a glimmer of truth in the spokesperson’s declaration: “The factory is not the property of Xhuveli himself, but of the members of his family…”
