Roma Organizations Demand Solution for the “Bekirov Case”
The Humanitarian Voluntary Association of the Roma “Mesecina” from Gostivar accused the Macedonian state of discriminatory approach to the case of the Trajan Bekirov, a Romani adolescent whose death and the responsibility for it remain unsolved a full year after Bekirov was killed in a raid by the special police unit “Alfa”.
According to “Mesecina”, the Public Prosecutor has obviously disregarded the fact when it decided to not bring up charges despite the “evident causal relation between the death of the child and the police actions.
In addition to the attempts of the court to de-stimulate the carrying out of further procedure through inaction and purposeful prolongation of legal deadlines, the authorities disregard the fact that a child was involved, thus committing violations of several important provisions of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, including Article 37 which prohibits exposure of children to inhuman, brutal and humiliating sanctions and torture. That is the very aspect that warrants a serious review of police actions and procedure to determine the existence of real culpability.
It is unacceptable, say “Mesecina” representatives, for Macedonia to allow that such a case remain unsolved in the situation when we attempt a thorough reform of police and judiciary, in order to establish a system for effective protection of human rights and freedoms. Quite to the contrary, in all latest reports regarding human rights in Macedonia, the state is named in relation to the issue of protection of rights of Roma population.
