UNDP Supports Destruction of Weapons

UNDP, KFOR and Kosovo Police Service started the destruction of confiscated illegal weapons on Friday, May 25, in an event organized in Camp Victoria in Ajvali, Prishtina.

The event, as it is announced by organizer, is a part of the Kosovo Small Arms Control Project (KOSSAC) funded by the Governments of UK, Sweden, Belgium, Netherlands and the European Union.

The 7.000 weapons that are going to be destroyed as part of this process represent the successful cooperation between UNDP, KPS and KFOR. The weapons have been seized by the KPS as part of their criminal investigation work.

“Their destruction will prevent the risk of the weapons to act as a destabilising factor in Kosovo and ensure there is no possibility of their diversion through illegal channels into civilian possession”, it is said in UNDP, press-release.

A recent Survey estimates that as of June 2006, there were approximately 400.000 weapons in Kosovo.
