Enough to the pressure upon media - Press Office

Mjaft! Movement expressed serious concerns for the direct pressure that the current Government exerts on free expression. The movement condemns, in front of the Albanian and international public opinion, the unjustifiable politically biased fines that the Government claims from Top Channel TV and demands its immediate cancellation.

”We have supported, as we will always do, the right of free speech and the free media in the country, considering it, as one of the main abutment of society, the absence of which would not make democracy function properly”, says Mjaft in a press release.

The astonishingly high fine that has been unfairly put on Top Channel, clearly shows the government’s attitude toward the free expression, claims Mjaft. The battle against informality, can no longer serve as a camouflage for anti-democratic and arbitrary actions.

”The Prime minister, Sali Berisha, can no longer deny the obvious truth: the Albanians do not want Top Channel to close down! This is not just a battle between Top Channel and the government. On the contrary, this is a full-scale battle for the freedom and independence of the media in general. This is also a battle for the very functioning of democracy”, adds the public statement.

The history of Albania has many times been burdened by the different government’s pressures toward the media. However, the media has always come out victorious. The same should happen this time.
