OFDA Donates 50,000 USD Worth of Fire-Fighting Equipment

The U.S. Office of Foreign Disaster Asssistance (OFDA) announced last Friday, August 3, that the U.S. Government will make a donation of 50,000 US Dollars in fire-fighting equipment to Macedonia.

Jillian Milovanovic, the U.S. Ambassador to Macedonia, requested, on July 25, approval from Washington for urgent funds for procurement of fire-fighting equipment.

In coordination with the Centre for Crisis Management of the Macedonian Government, USAID will deliver the equipment to the local fire-fighting brigades in Bitola, Strumica, Tetovo and Veles, as well as the “Makedonski Sumi” Public Forestry Enterprise.

The National Directorate for Prevention and Rescue said on Friday that in the month of July 2007, there were 565 forest fires in Macedonia that destroyed about 6,000 hectares of forests, causing damages in excess of 15 million EUR.
