ICRC Closes Montenegro Office; Future Focus on Development Programmes

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) will redirect its future activities in the Balkans towards development programmes, especially to the programme for capacity building and support of Commission on Missing Persons.

Paul Henry Arni, the Head of Regional Delegation of ICRC for Montenegro, Serbia, Macedonia and Albania, informed Montenegro\\\'s Prime Minister Sturanovic about ICRC\\\'s plans for next year and the decision to close the Office in Montenegro.

He noted that the decision to establish a Regional Office was made due to the improving humanitarian situation in Montenegro and the region in general, and because of strengthened capacity for action of national Red Cross associations.

Arni, responding to the expressed interest to involve Montenegro’s military in education programmes and courses in international humanitarian law, that ICRC is prepared to assist all armed forces in the region to include the principles of international humanitarian law in their regular training programmes.
