OSB Convention: Places, Symbols and Stories on the War in the Balkans

The Balkan Observatory (Osservatorio Balkani) is holding an international convention Places, symbols and stories tied to the war in the Balkans, on November 9, in Rovereto.

The conference will start with a screening of a documentary by Andrea Oskari Rossini, produced with the support of the EU through the project called Second World War Memorials in ex-Jugoslavia: Their Role Past, Present and Future.

The annual conference of the Observatory on the Balkans is dedicated to the issue of the memory of the wars. During the conference, the documentary film �Circle of memory� will be premi�red in Italy.

After World War II we deceived ourselves that ritual commemorations could prevent the repetition of similar tragedies in Europe. The memory of that conflict, however, became one of the tools which paved the way to the wars of the \\\'90s that led to the destruction of Yugoslavia.

Starting from the experience in the Balkans, internationally renowned scholars, journalists, politicians and activists will examine the issue of the memory of the XX century and discuss the extent to which the European integration process can still overcome the danger of war in Europe, after the dramatic failure of the \\\'90s.

Participants will include journalists, academics, politicians and campaigners of world wide acclaim. Together they will think about the policies related to memory adopted by socialist Yugoslavia after the Second World War and those used following the more recent war in the 90\\\'s. Among the speakers will be: Wolfgang H�pken, Franco Juri, Nata�a Kandić, Heike Karge, Wolfgang Petritsch, Vittorio Prodi
