Greens Go to the European Parliament

Environmental protection association gathered in the Committee for Protection of Citizens from Industrial Pollution has maintained contact with the European Green Party and MPs in the European Parliament, on issues related to environmental pollution in Croatia. The cooperation has intensified over the past several months, due to frequent incident in Croatia, like leaks in Sisak and Karlovac.

During the visit to Brussels last April, it was decided to wait for six months before the Committee starts officially addressing the actors of the international community.

That deadline being expired, and in view of the recent (November 2) entry into force of the new Law on Environmental Protection which is largely seen a failure – in spite of some positive elements – and may generate new problems, the associations decided to round up a list of about 30 disputed situations and forward them to Brussels, together with proper documentation.

The main criteria for selection was the amount of documents available on any individual case, the comprehensiveness of the problem, as well as the size and economic importance of existing and potential polluters. The aim is to use internationalization of the problems to get more quality solutions, since competent authorities don’t fully implement their legal obligations.

On that note, the European Green Party has already adopted a number of resolutions on environmental issues in Croatia (Druzba Adria project, LNG terminals on the Adriatic coast, golf terrains in Istria, waste disposal facility on Lecevica, etc.).
