RNVO ROMA 2002 Proposes Roma Education Priority Programme
The Lobby Group for Roma Education proposes a programme with defined global and priority educational needs of the Roma population. The Group, working under the auspices of the Roma 2002 Coordination of Roma NGOs, advocates advanced sustainable projects that will contribute to realization of operational action plans of the Decade of Roma Inclusion 2005-2015.
Within the priority programme the Group demands a comprehensive registration of children that need to enrol in first grade elementary school, having in mind that a great number of Roma children have no documents whatsoever. The Group also demands greater involvement of their parents in School Boards, corresponding to the number of Roma students at a given school.
According to the Group, it is of utmost importance to secure that Roma children are enrolled in mixed classes, in order to avoid the creation of so-called “Roma classes”, in order to promote their integration and prevent segregation. Also, the teachers and school psychologists should strengthen their cooperation with non-Roma parents, in order to eliminate prejudices towards Roma children and Roma community in general.
The Lobby Group demands increased number of Roma students in the faculties producing teachers, as well as creation of Roma Studies Department at the University in Skopje, with Roma language being the subject of studies, and not just language of instruction.
Finally, RNVO ROMA 2002 demands greater participation of Roma in the faculties of all state-funded universities in the country, as well as more teachers and employees in all structures of the Ministry of Education and Science, having in mind that, at this moment, there are just two Roma employees in the whole Ministry, its offices and departments.
The Lobby Group expects to achieve higher level of cooperation between the Roma community, nongovernmental organizations and state institutions, in order to provide for more comprehensive, higher quality education for Roma in Macedonia.
