Offbeat Exhibition: Look and See the Violence Against Women
The Multimedia exhibition Offbeat – Look and See the Violence against Women, with works by 16 prominent authors from Serbia and abroad opened yesterday at the Student Cultural Centre in Belgrade.
Gorica Mojović, Deputy to the Acting Mayor of Belgrade, in her opening address, noted that the exhibition was opened under the auspices of the global 16 Days of Activism Campaign.
Mojović emphasized that the City of Belgrade will continue to support such events and reminded that it was the City Council that contributed the bulk of the investment in the recently opened safe house for victims of domestic violence.
The curator Maja Ćirić selected works by prominent female artists directly or indirectly dealing with the subject of effects of violence.
- The exhibition aims to destabilize media stereotypes presenting women as objects and part of patriarchal system, and to bring out the complexity of the problem that can’t be reduced to the level of individual act, says Ćirić.
The exhibition was opened on initiative by Autonomous Women Centre, with support by the Belgrade City Assembly which joined, on May 15, the campaign of the Council of Europe and the Congress of Local and Regional Government – Stop Domestic Violence against Women.
The Campaign is implemented in more than 40 cities in Europe.
