Pešcanik Promotion Interrupted

B92 radio and television strongly protested the incident that prevented the promotion of its radio show Peščanik in Aranđelovac.

The broadcaster emphasized the media’s elementary role as carrier of information and ideas on political and other issues of public interest, and to contribute to creation of informed public opinion on such issues and ideas.

It demanded from the Government and other competent bodies to present their own views on protection of Constitutionally guaranteed freedom of opinion and expression, and the measures it intends to take to secure their full observance, especially in view of the fact that the persons that stopped the debate carried party insignia of New Serbia, represented in the Government through Minister Velimir Ilić.

\"The absence of clear reaction of the authorities to this and similar incidents can only stimulate the various radical elements to continue their attacks on the media and feed the climate of intolerance”, says B92 in a public statement.

B92 demanded from the authorities to protect the organizers of the promotion from persecution in their own communities.

About 200 members of the Radical and New Serbia political parties prevented the promotion of Peščanik radio programme at the Cultural Centre in Aranđelovac, last night. About 50 opponents of the promotion entered the conference room which was already filled with citizens who awaited the start of the debate.

Svetlana Lukić and Svetlana Vuković, the authors of the programme, and their guest managed to leave the room moments before the attackers rushed in.
