I May Be Confused, but Not Enough to Allow to Be Screwed

Greek philosopher Heraclitus claimed that change is the only constant, and I am inclined to agree, having in mind the latest developments on B&H political scene, if only I weren’t bothered by the question of validity and purpose of changes that result in a situation in which everything remains the same.

If social dynamics is, indeed, a circular process that takes us, again and again, to the starting point, it is rather discouraging, and I think that it might be better then to forget about attempts to think over the social processes and to turn to study of mystical unity of nature that surrounds us and, eventually, recognize that the hill over my house is actually a long lost ancient pyramid.

Only yesterday we were in the midst of an insurmountable political crisis, followed by reawakened war paranoia of the citizens and rising prices of the bare necessities, while today we (You? They? initial the EU Stabilization and Association Agreement.

High-ranking officials praise BiH government representatives and their responsible approach to our road to Euroepean integrations and a future which, according to Fena news agency and carried by the national media, is bright, as expected. Could it be the same future that looked so dark and ultimately uncertain only last week, as reported by the international media, and carried by Fena.

The discrepancy of the totally opposed situations that change as if it were a Hollywood film leaves obvious holes that would be impossible to live with if not for a term that we invented after the war (war is, by the way, the main measurement of time here, dividing the time to before and after the war), a mantra, going by far beyond its own meaning, compresses all meaning in a form of comprehensive understanding and turns into a factor of reconciliation between ourselves and the world around us, the only answer to the universal amazement with life. That magical word in Bosnia and Herzegovina today is “normala”, followed, as a rule, by a shrug of one’s shoulders.

“Normala” is the most common possible reaction to any conclusion. You say “normala” if you best friends gets hooked on heroin; it is “normala” to have 3,000 addicts in the city; it is “normala” for the MPs to raise their salaries on a whim, that there is no cinema, to work on the black market, even the initialing of the SAA. It would be “normala”, by the way, if they didn’t initial it, either. “Normala” protects us all from madness.

I would, however, jump into the madness and ask how was it possible to have such an insurmountable political crisis, accompanied by fears of a new war and galloping prices yesterday, only to make huge steps towards EU today. I may be confused, but it doesn’t mean I want to be fucked by madmen (as the otherwise untranslatable in more politically correct words saying goes). On the other hand, if I have to be the screwed party, I want to know who and why repeatedly creates such storms before the calm and takes us on a round trip.

Are political storms created by domestic politicians to aver the public attention from their own participation in transition-privatization crimes that has had hundreds of millions of Convertible Marks siphoned out to private pockets? Are the periods of calm forced initiatives of international officials, designed to prevent and stop eventual troubles that could, in fact, follow yet another regional realignment? What do we, the citizens, represent on that windswept road? Does the coming calmness bring peace, true social peace and security, or is it sign of acceptance of agony and continuous sinking to the bottom? It could largely depend on us, having in mind that “on the surface of the spectacles of pseudo-cyclic time, the supreme style of our age still resides only where, albeit concealed, the obvious necessity for revolution rules”.
