MOST Presents Proposed Changes in the Election Code

The MOST civic association, in cooperation with the Ministry of Justice and the OSCE Spillover Mission in Skopje, promoted the Proposal for Changes and Amendments to Macedonian Election Code.

The Proposal is a result of the work of a series of working groups that led to a consensus between participating domestic and international experts, representatives of the state administration, political parties and the civil sector, on amendments that would contribute to a more efficient, fair and free election process.

The proposed changes refer to three essential areas – election irregularities, competences of the State Election Commission, and campaign funding.

Renata Treneska Deskoska, an expert from the Faculty of Law, emphasized that these changes are an important step toward improved election rules. However, in order to have truly fair and democratic election, the will of the political actors for fair competition is needed, together with competent and capable institutions made of persons with great individual and professional integrity.

- In our view, the main task is actually ahead of us. The Government has to submit the Proposal to the Sobranie of Macedonia, which should adopt it in order for this effort to bear fruit, said Darko Aleksov, MOST Executive Director.

The project was implemented between May and December 2007, with the support by OSCE Spillover Mission, the Dutch Embassy and the Norwegian People’s Aid.
