Serbia Takes Over ICPDR Presidency
On January 1, Serbia took its turn at the Presidency of International Commission for Protection of the Danube River (ICPDR), which includes all the countries in the Danube Basin.
Saša Dragin, Serbian Minister of Environmental Protection, said recently that the ICPDR Presidency is a good opportunity for the country to start funding purification and processing of waste water before EU starts demanding it.
He added that Serbia could also use this opportunity to approach foreign donors to contribute to start of communal and industrial waste water in the country where, he notes, over 80% of waste waters is released into the rivers.
The minister also noted that the Danube is actually more polluted in Bulgaria, which will have to invest over five billion Eur to clean the river and install purification facilities.
