NGOs Don’t Pressure the Court
|
Srdjan Dvornik, Executive Director of the Croatian Helsinki Committee says that public comments by organizations attacked by the defense team of Branimir Glavaš, or any other public statement for that matter, can’t be used as a justification to exclude the public from the trial, as demanded by Glavaš’s lawyer, Veljko Miljević.
HHO believes that, even if the general public is exhempted, the Court should allow experts and competent civil society organizations to monitor the trial. - The NGOs, with their publicly expressed opinion on the decision of the Sabor regarding the immunity from prosecution for Branimir Glavas, didn’t put pressure on the parties of the trial or commented on their actions. Therefore, unlike other actors, they didn’t interfere in the trial proceedings. Their status of observers shouldn’t be threatened by any tactics applied by the defence, adds Dvornik. Miljević demanded the exemption of non-governmental organizations from the courtroom, because of the request presented by three organizations – Civic Committee for Human Rights, Centre for Peace, Non-Violence and Human Rights and Dokumenta, to test the constitutionality of Sabor’s decision to let Glavas defend from freedom. |
