Electronic Media Council Condemns TV Programmes

The Croatian Electronic Media Council, at its meeting with Mila Jelavic, the Children Ombudsperson and representatives of HTV, RTL and Nova TV, the leading broadcasters in the country, condemned broadcasts of contents unsuited for children.

The Council and Ombudsperson Jelavic expressed their concerns over the great number programmes depicting sex and violence in early evening time-slots and warned the broadcasters of the possibility to apply far stricter legal measures if the situation is not improved.

Jelavic also emphasized the necessity to establish responsibility of broadcasters towards basic European principles for protection of children and minors, while TV stations’ representatives accepted the objections and accepted the obligation to reduce the numbers of disputed programmes, through self-regulation and editorial responsibility.

The Council announced immediate adoption of rules to establish a parental guidance system to designate appropriate age and time-slots for their broadcasts of such programmes.
