Serbia Elects Tadic

After his win, Tadic said that the citizens proved that Serbia is a great European democracy. He announced that he intends to meet with Nikolic as soon as possible saying that his opponent’s share of the vote deserves respect.

Nikolic, on the other hand, was the first to congratulate Tadic on the victory. He noted that the difference was about two percent of the votes, adding that he will not give up on his political struggle.

Soon after the preliminary results were declared, Democratic Party started celebrations on the streets of Belgrade.

Sonja Brkic, the Chairwoman of the State Election Commission, said that only two complaints were filed that will not have effect on the final outcome of the elections.

Tadic’s victory was greeted with relief by the European Union and the neighbouring countries, for fears that a win by right-wing nationalist Nikolic could complicate the situation in the region.
