CSOs Demand Greater Transparency

Civil society organizations demanded from the Croatian Sabor (the Parliament) to name the external members of Parliamentary Committees in a clear and transparent procedure, to reduce the number of laws adopted in an urgent procedure, and demanded greater transparency from the Government in terms of allocation of funds from the State Budget.

The demands aim to contribute to greater transparency and accountability in front of the citizesn, said representatives of civil associations at the press conference held at GONG.

Tomislav Tomašević from Zelena akcija environmental association emphasized the need for clear criteria and procedures for election of external members of Sabor Committees, defined procedures and public competition for the places in the committees.

Sandra Benčić from Centre for Peace Studies warned that the previous Sabor adopted 76 percent of all laws in urgent procedures. That approach turns the Sabor into a technical body, which is the role of the Government, Benčić said.

Suzana Jašić, from GONG presented the demand fro greater transparency in allocation of public funds, noting that the Government didn’t report to the public about the decisions to allocate funds, as well as the agenda, materials and decisions adopted at its sessions.

In addition to the three organizations mentioned above, the initiative is endorsed by B.a.B.e., ZaMir, Zeleni Forum and Transparency Croatia.
