AntiNATO ffzg: Open Letter to the Croatian Public

According to announcements, Croatia should receive the invitation to join NATO this April. Croatian membership is taken for granted and indisputable, in spite of absence of proper public debate, says the open letter of the AntiNATO ffzg.

According to the organization that gathers professors and students at the Zagreb University School of Philosophy, Croatia has found itself in an absurd situation when significant number of citizens opposes NATO membership, while all major political parties promote it. The question is, whom do those parties represent?

- The Government refuses any possibility to hold a referendum, although it is clear that the citizens should decide such an important matter. In fact, it is not a problem to organize a referendum on a location of a new football stadium, but it is a problem to ask the citizens what they think about NATO accession, says AntiNATOffzg.

The organization lists several reasons why it opposes the NATO membership, including their opposition to Croatia giving support to Anglo-American corporate imperialism; the big expenses that membership brings to the table; the danger of terrorist attacks that NATO is not designed to prevent.

- The question is not if Croatia should join NATO, but what would happen if it didn`t join it? The answer is, nothing at all. In fact, we will be much safer, will not spend millions in vain, and our conscience will be clean. Therefore, we call on the Croatian public to raise its voice againt NATO membership, concludes the open letter.

(Note: the Initiative does not represent the opinions of all students and faculty members at the School of Philosophy).
