Green List Reacts to Announced NPS Projects in Croatia
Aware of the fact the international nuclear lobby has launched a global offensive, abusing the findings of the latest IPPC Global Climate Report requiring urgent dramatic reduction of CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions, the Zelena lista (Green List), associate member of European Green Party, was nevertheless shocked by recent announcement of possible construction of nuclear power station in Croatia by 2020.
Green List agrees that nuclear power stations emit less greenhouse gasses that fossil fuel operated power plants, but the negative results of theri work is far more serious, detrimental, long-lasting and costly.
Those negative effects don`t cover just possible disasters, but also taking care of spent nuclear fuel which remains so radioactive after its used that it demands special handling and storage measures, as well as the problems resulting when closing down power stations that stopped production.
- We are not surprised by the fact that our energy experts are inclined to support nuclear solutions. They mostly completed their education in the 1970s and 1980s, when nuclear option ruled the energy field, comments Vlasta Toth on the behalf of the Green List.
What those experts disregard in their reports and lobbying efforts, comments Green List, is the security and environmental component and the true cost-benefit breakdown of an investment in a nuclear power station.
- Renewable sources of energy are the only way forward for Croatia, says Toth, adding that the future of energy sector in the whole world relies on solar power, wind power and geothermal energy, and noting that Croatia does have some comparative advantages there, offered by its climate and geographic position, with Dalmatia, for instance, registering an average 2,500 sun-hours per year.
