YUCOM Establishes Early Warning System

Provoked by the serious deterioration of political situation in Serbia after Kosovo’s declaration of independence, the excessive and self-destructing policies of state institutions and political entities, the Lawyers` Committee for Human Rights YUCOM establishes an Early Warning System (EWS) for violations of human rights and disrespect of democratic institutions.

The violent protests and turmoil in the streets of Belgrade on February 17 and 21, pointed out, in a dramatic fashion, at the destructive potential in the society and the need to direct the attention of domestic and international public to the danger presented by increasingly frequent and diverse violations of human and civil rights and freedoms and unscrupulous disregard for basic democratic principles and values.

- In such difficult circumstances, we need an updated and timely system for reporting, to the domestic and international public likewise, on general trends and modalities of human rights and democratic values violations, in order to prevent future violations, says YUCOM.

Particular attention will be paid to certain phenomena (media reports, activities of political parties and figure and state institutions, etc.) that point out at clear and present danger of occurrence of violations, which will give the whole action a sufficient preventive dimension, so direly needed in the past.

YUCOM announces, starting this week, a regular weekly bulletin with cases of human rights violations, to be distributed to a huge number of recipients, both in Serbia and abroad.

For additional information on possible involvement in the said activities, contact YUCOM at YUCOM.EWS@gmail.com.
