Croatia Has to Face the Truth
|
Whole of Croatia follows carefully the start of the trial in the Hague Tribunal of three Croatian generals for the crimes committed in the Storm Military Offensive in 1995. Over the next two years of the trial, many details about the offensive are expected to be uncovered.
Ivo Josipovic, law professor and member of Croatian Sabor, says that Croatia will have to face the truth, whatever it may be. - If the generals are acquitted of the charges, the whole situation will be much simpler, having in mind that the majority of Croatia citizens expect such an outcome. However, if they are found guilty and sentenced, we will face a number of moral historical problems that we will have to live with, says Josipovic. Anto Nobilo, lawyer that defended general Tihomir Blaskic at ICTY, doesn’t believe that the charges of joint criminal venture means that the whole Homeland War is on trial. - If crimes were committed, and they were committed, than it is in the best interest of Croatian state and society to determine who committed them, says Nobilo. He adds that there is no intention to put Croatian state on trial or to determine if Croatia was created on criminal foundations, that Croatia had the rights, under international law, to defend its territory with armed force, which nobody can dispute. |
