Strong Reactions to MUP KS Decision to Ban April 6 Protests
After the informal group Građani/ke Sarajeva (Citizens of Sarajevo), the organizer of the protests against cantonal and city authorities over the deteriorated security situation in Sarajevo, reacted to the ban of the protests announced for April 6, announced by the Cantonal Ministry of Interior, a number of NGOs and civic associations joined in with their own condemnations of the ban.

- We invite all people that have had it with the irresponsibility, passivity, abuses and manipulations to take to the streets on April 6 and to join us in a peaceful and dignified protest and to show that we are not a mob of anarchists and that we love our city more than any greedy politician, say the Građani/ke Sarajeva in their reaction.
The City Council of Sarajevo denied yesterday, in a public statement, the allegations by the citizens that it sought a ban on citizens` gathering on April 6, noting that it simply submitted to MUP a list of events planned to take place during the celebrations of the Day of the City of Sarajevo.
The reactions were joined by the Association for Protection of Holders of Old Currency Savings in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which openly supports and participates in the protests.
- We applaud the decision to organize protests on April 6. In spite of attempts to prevent the citizens to freely express their discontent with the general political situation in the country and their opposition to organized stealing of public and private property, protests will be held, indeed, says Amila Omersoftic, the President of the Association, inviting its members to join the gathering.
Fourteen non-governmental organizations from Sarajevo and B&H joined the condemnations of the decision of the Cantonal MUP, who point out that such a decision is in direct violation of international law, Constitutional norms and all elementary norms that provide the foundations for human and democratic rights.
- We demand from the authorities to immediately annul the ban that falls on the very day when Sarajevo celebrates its freedom. We ask the international organizations that protect the values of human rights to raise their voice in protest of this apparent attack on freedom of expression and association, say the organizations in a joint statement.
The latest public opinion survey conducted by Prism Research Agency, on a sample of 414 citizens older than 15 year of age, shows that 79% of the citizens support the protests and believe that the Cantonal Government, with Prime Minister Silajdžić at its head, is the most responsible for the current situation in Sarajevo.
The video clip with the invitation to join the protests is available for viewing on YouTube.com, while radio jingle is available for download and listening at www.protest.ba.
