Macedonia should make efforts to make education more accessible to the Roma, demanded the participants in yesterday`s debate Challenges of Integration of Roma Community, held on the occasion of April 8, the International Day of the Roma.
- Only improved education will allow for better social integration of the Roma and take them out of the clutches of poverty, concluded the debate. Šaban Saliu, Member of Parliament pointed out that, in spite of the many efforts to improve the situation, especially in areas of employment and education, it is far from good. His colleague Neždet Mustafa asked for problems to be emphasized every day, not just on national holidays or on the International Roma Day, and should be solved regardless of who is in power. Many activities and celebrations were held in the other cities with significant Roma populations. In Bitola, 1,000 citizens gathered in the main city square to celebrate the Day of the Roma. - We call for unity. We are all equal in front of the law, but the Roma are still discriminated in employment, education, even when entering cafes and restaurants. All our activities are directed at eradication of such injustice, says Edie Ali, Roma civic activist. |
