Earth Day in Croatia

On the occasion of the 30th Earth Day, a number of activities are planned to take place all over Croatia, involving a number of nongovernmental associations and Government institutions. The focus of the Croatian events will be put on the problem of waste disposal and recycling.
Friends of Animals association will use the Earth Day to reiterate protests against slaughtering of farmed animals, with the emphasis on industry`s effects on climate changes. On Tuesday, April 22, they will distribute information to the citizens, during Zelena Akcija`s Eco Market on the Petar Preradovic Square in Zagreb, on the benefits of vegetarian lifestyle and the need to recycle. Waste disposal is in the focus of activities organized by Zelena akcija, which will organize a lecture by Laszlo Pernecky from Hungary, on the topic of «Reduction of Quantities of Waste through the 3R Concept - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle». On Tuesday, it will hold a roundtable discussion (11:00 hours) and laer, at 19:00 hours, it will air the «Story of Stuff» documentary film. The same message is in the focus of Sunce Association from Split, which will distribute textile shopping bags on several locations in the city. Later in the day, elementary school pupils will be able to exchange toys, play the game of «Responsible waste management principles» and a quiz on the topic of waste disposal. The Ministry of Environmental Protection will mark the Earth Day with enlarged budget for financing of activities of environmental association from two to three million Kuna and expects proposals by the start of May 2008. Alert, will make guest appearance in Vukovar, on April 24, with a presentation of the book Mythical Aspects of Eco-Feminism by Mirela Holy, followed by a round table discussion on female contributions to environmental protection. The Earth Day was first celebrated in the U.S. in 1970. Today, many organizations and association in Croatia join the activities related to this important and unique initiative in the fact that it grew from the bottom up, as a result of the activities of environmental associations. |
