WB Approves $4.5 Million US for Protection of Lake of Skadar

World Bank will approve of $4.5 million US in loans to Albania and Montenegro for protection of the eco-system in the region of the Lake of Skadar.
The World Bank says that Albania will get a loan of $1.9 million US, while the rest of the loan will be allocated to Montenegro. The loan will be implemented by the ministries of environmental protection of the two countries. The funds aim to establish cross-border cooperation to build mechanisms for rational management of the Lake of Skadar and its environment. During last 17 years, the Lake has suffered from extensive pollution, due to uncontrolled reconstruction works and releases of communal sewage into its water, but also due to lack of proper investments. At this moment, the Lake resembles a huge bog and its eco-system has been gravely damaged. |
